Common questions about explosion proof LED lighting for hazardous area applications.
What is an explosion proof light and when is it required?
An explosion proof light (also called an Ex proof light or flameproof luminaire) is a lighting fixture certified to contain any internal ignition and prevent it from igniting the surrounding atmosphere. Required in ATEX/IECEx Zone 1, Zone 2 (flammable gas/vapour) and Zone 21/22 (combustible dust) classified areas per IEC 60079-0. Typical locations include oil refineries, chemical plants, paint booths, offshore platforms, and grain handling facilities.
What is the difference between ATEX and IECEx certification?
ATEX is the European Union and UK standard for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme accepted in 50+ countries worldwide including the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and South America. Both our Meteora and Mega EX explosion proof LED lights carry both certificates, ensuring acceptance in any target market without re-testing.
Can explosion proof LED lights replace HID or fluorescent hazardous area fixtures?
Yes. Our LED explosion proof light fixtures achieve 160 lm/W efficacy — 3 to 5× more efficient than HPS or metal halide alternatives. The Mega EX 200W provides up to 32,000 lumens, equivalent to a 400W HID lamp. LED explosion proof lights also eliminate lamp replacement in hazardous areas, significantly reducing maintenance entry permits and labour costs.
What IP rating do explosion proof lights need for outdoor installations?
For outdoor hazardous area locations, IP65 is the minimum recommended ingress protection level (protected against jets of water). The Meteora Series achieves IP66 (protected against powerful water jets), making it suitable for wash-down areas and severe weather conditions. Both series achieve IK10 mechanical impact protection, rated for 20 joule impacts.
Do you supply explosion proof lights for Zone 1 gas environments?
Yes. The Mega EX Series carries ATEX II 2G Ex db IIB T5 Gb and IECEx Ex db IIB T5 Gb certification, qualifying it for use in Zone 1 flameproof (Ex db) applications where flammable gas or vapour may be present intermittently under normal operating conditions. Contact us to confirm gas group compatibility for your specific application.
What is the minimum order quantity and can you supply OEM?
We supply both project quantities and bulk OEM orders. A standard 20GP container fits up to 1,260 units of the Meteora Series or 480 units of the Mega EX Series. OEM branding, custom CCT configurations, and DALI/dimming options are available from factory. Contact our export team for volume pricing and lead times.
